‘A shame’ - Maresca comments on Chelsea’s latest banished player

The Italian has had his say on the West London club reportedly exiling another player from the first-team squad.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca expressed his disappointment over the absence of young defender Josh Acheampong from the first-team squad due to an ongoing contract dispute. 

The young defender was reportedly banished from playing for the first-team and development squad owing to a refusal to agree to a contract extension, with his current deal expiring in 2026.

The Italian boss acknowledged Acheampong's potential to become a "top player" and a valuable asset for the West London club, emphasising the club's desire to retain him.

Maresca revealed that he had a positive conversation with the 18-year-old three weeks prior regarding his contract situation, but there has been no progress since. 

He expressed concern that the lack of playing time could hinder Acheampong's development, especially as the teenager needs minutes to grow and improve.

“To be honest, I feel a bit of shame for Josh because I think this kind of game can be an opportunity for him,” said Maresca on Wednesday ahead of Chelsea’s Conference League match against Panathinaikos.

“I had a chat with him, personally, about three weeks ago; about his situation and the chat we had was a very good chat, a positive chat but since that moment I haven’t spoken to him again.

“As I said, it’s a shame. I think Josh potentially can become a top player. He is still 18, so still very young, so many things can change for him, but he can potentially be (a) very important player for Chelsea.

“I really like Josh and I would really like to have him here with us but it is not possible.”

Despite the setback, Maresca remains hopeful that a resolution can be found, allowing Acheampong to return to the squad and fulfil his potential at Chelsea. 

What next for Chelsea?

The Blues, keen to respond to Sunday's Premier League loss against Liverpool, take on Greek side Panathinaikos on Thursday, seeking a second win to maintain their 100% start to the revamped, 36-team Conference League.
