The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has appointed Bello Lawal as its new national president.

Naija News reports that Lawal was the chairman of Kaita Local Government Area and the ALGON Chairman for Katsina State before the appointment.

This election occurred during the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which was convened on Tuesday in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State.

The election was necessitated by the conclusion of Aminu Mua’zu Maifata’s tenure, the former Chairman of the Lafia Local Government Area, whose term is set to end on October 8, 2024.

The transition process was supervised by Chief Odunayo Ategbero, the National Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ALGON.

Bello Lawal was elected, along with other officials, to lead the association.

In his acceptance speech, Lawal expressed his appreciation to the NEC members for their confidence in him and commitment to advancing the accomplishments of his predecessor, with the aim of promoting the autonomy of local governments across the nation.

He said, “I am deeply honoured by this responsibility, and I assure you all that I will give my very best to further the cause of this great organization,” Lawal stated. “With the support of every member, I am confident that we can push the objectives of ALGON to a desirable end, especially in the ongoing struggle for local government autonomy.”

Lawal called for unity among members, stressing the importance of cooperation in achieving their common goals.

“I appeal to all members to work together with me to achieve the vision we all share for strengthening governance at the local level,” he added.

In his remark, the departing President, Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, extended his congratulations to Lawal and encouraged members of ALGON to offer their complete support to the new leadership.

He commended the NEC for facilitating a peaceful and transparent electoral process, expressing his belief in Lawal’s capability to guide the association effectively.

“I have no doubt that Bello Lawal will lead ALGON to greater heights. I call on all of you to give him the same cooperation you gave me during my tenure,” Maifata said during the handover ceremony.
