APC Chieftain Calls For Crisis-Free Enugu LG Elections

A former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, has advised electorate in the state to desist from any electoral violence as the state holds local government elections Saturday.

Dr Nwoye, a lawyer, said the election does not worth the waste of anybody’s blood. He also advised parents to advise their children against thuggery, adding that “we need peace in the state”. He advised losers to display the spirit of sportsmanship while winners should carry everybody along.

He, however, decried last Saturday’s killing of the Chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders’ Association, Chief Stephen Aniagu. THE WHISTLER reports that the killers of the deceased are yet to be apprehended despite the 48-hour ultimatum given by the state government for the apprehension of the culprits.

Nwoye urged the residents to always provide information on criminal activities to the police, adding that, “If people are afraid to reveal these criminals, we don’t know who the next victim will be. There should be a phone number which people can anonymously call to give intelligence reports on security matters.”

Meanwhile, residents of the state complied with the police order by not opening their shops for business to enable them to cast their votes in the LG polls. A survey carried our by THE WHISTLER showed that various roads were deserted with only those providing essential services seen.

Some people however defied the order to enjoy themselves at obscure pubs. As at the time of filing this report, there have not been any reported cases of electoral violence.
