Aviation Minister Concludes Reciprocal Rights With UAE Ahead Of Emirates Flight Resumption

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, led a high-level Nigerian delegation to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today to finalise negotiations for the much-anticipated resumption of Emirates Airlines’ flight operations to Nigeria.

The meeting, held earlier today, also laid the groundwork for a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between the two nations, aimed at strengthening aviation ties and ensuring mutually beneficial cooperation.

Keyamo, accompanied by his technical team, engaged in constructive discussions with UAE aviation authorities, focusing on the smooth reintroduction of Emirates Airlines into Nigerian airspace, scheduled for next Tuesday. A key element of the discussions was the new BASA, which is expected to enhance collaboration between Nigeria and the UAE, setting clear guidelines for their evolving relationship in the aviation sector.

A major outcome of the talks was the agreement on reciprocal rights, allowing Nigerian airlines the opportunity to commence direct flight operations to the UAE. This marks a significant development for Nigeria’s aviation industry, boosting international connectivity and providing travelers with more flight options between both countries.

Speaking on the successful negotiations, Keyamo stated, “Today’s discussions reaffirm our commitment to fostering a balanced and forward-looking partnership with the UAE. We are pleased to have secured reciprocal operational rights for Nigerian airlines, which will not only deepen our bilateral ties but also enhance the global competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation industry. As Emirates returns to Nigeria, we look forward to a thriving and mutually beneficial air service relationship.

This development comes after weeks of diplomatic and technical consultations aimed at restoring direct air travel between Nigeria and the UAE. It reflects the Federal Government’s dedication to achieving the best possible outcomes for both Nigerian and international travelers.

The resumption of Emirates flight operations and the implementation of the new BASA are expected to play a pivotal role in promoting tourism, business and cultural exchanges between Nigeria and the UAE, while also fostering economic growth.
