BOWFT24: Bayelsa Queens Dominate Espoir FC 4-0 to Advance To Next Stage

On Thursday morning, October 10th, 2024, Bayelsa Queens FC overwhelmed Espoir FC of Benin Republic with a commanding 4-0 victory in their final Group B match of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT).

The match, played at the University of Benin Sports Stadium, saw both teams fighting to break the deadlock in the first half, but it ended goalless, with Bayelsa Queens showing greater control and hunger for goals.

The second half saw Bayelsa Queens return with renewed energy, and in the 49th minute, Mercy Omokwo opened the scoring with a well-taken finish.

The Prosperity Girls doubled their lead in the 65th minute, putting pressure on Espoir FC, who tried to fight back but couldn’t penetrate Bayelsa Queens’ solid defense.

Mariam Muyideen added a third goal in the 71st minute, sealing the game beyond Espoir’s reach.

Omokwo capped off her outstanding performance with her second goal of the match in the 75th minute, wrapping up the game at 4-0.

With this win, Bayelsa Queens FC have been the standout team in the tournament, scoring 11 goals while conceding none.

Their technical adviser, Whyte Ogbonda, who has led the team to a perfect group stage record, acknowledged the team’s progress but described them as “still a work in progress.”

Bayelsa Queens have set the pace at the BOWFT and look to continue their impressive run in the next stage of the tournament.
