Comedian Ali Baba recalls near death experience with Sani Abacha

Popular comedian Ali Baba has shared a memorable experience involving former military leader Sani Abacha during an episode of the Leadership Podcast.

Ali Baba recounted an event in Abuja where he was tasked with introducing the Akwa Ibom cultural group.

He recalled:

“The first close encounter I had with death was with Sani Abacha. When Abacha was president, Ernest Shonekan had been removed, so I went to do an event in Abuja, and it was time for the Akwa Ibom cultural group to perform. Abacha was wearing sunglasses that could fold, and as they started dancing, I stopped them and turned to Abacha, saying, ‘Your Excellency, sir, it’s almost 10; why are you wearing dark shades? Don’t you want to see their performance? Remove the shades, na.’

He continued, “Abacha took off the glasses while talking to someone, and as soon as he set them down, I signaled the troupe to continue. Then, I noticed DSS officers moving backstage, waiting for someone.

“I left the stage and sat on the ground next to Abacha. He joked with me and asked why I wasn’t going backstage, and I replied, ‘Don’t worry, sir, they can arrest me here if they want.’”
