As Edo State prepares to elect its new governor today, the Labour Party has called on eligible voters to disregard derogatory comments made by some political parties and individuals during the campaign. Over 2.2 million people with permanent voter cards are expected to cast their ballots.
The election has generated significant attention, with three major political parties vying for the top spot. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has fielded Senator Monday Okpebholo, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is backing Asue Ighodalo. Olumude Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, is flying the flag for the Labour Party.
However, concerns have been raised over comments made by incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, who has publicly stated that the election is a "do or die" affair. Obaseki, who is supporting Asue Ighodalo to succeed him, made the remarks at the PDP's grand finale campaign in Oredo Local Government area on September 13, 2024. He reiterated his stance on Channels Television's Politics Today on Thursday.
One eligible voter, Mr. Henry Osariemen, expressed fears that violence may mar the election due to the inciting comments. "Many people are not ready to vote tomorrow because politicians have declared war... For a sitting governor to say it's do or die, that's not a joke," he said.
In response, Edo State Labour Party Chairman Kelly Ogbaloi urged voters to ignore Obaseki's comments, describing them as "worthless propaganda." He encouraged electorates to come out en masse and vote for their preferred candidates, emphasizing that the Labour Party has a broad perspective and is poised to win the election.
As the people of Edo State head to the polls, the Labour Party's message of calm and determination is clear. With the electoral process underway, only time will tell which candidate will emerge victorious.
