Edo Election: IG Orders Movement Restriction

The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered a restriction of movement across Edo State ahead of the governorship election set for Saturday, September 21, 2024. The restriction is part of the measures to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible election process.

In a statement released on Friday by the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IG mandated that all forms of vehicular movement, including on roads and waterways, be restricted from 6 am to 6 pm on election day. However, essential service providers such as accredited media personnel, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders are exempt from the directive.

The statement also highlighted additional security measures, including a ban on security aides and escorts for VIPs at polling stations and collation centers. Unauthorized security personnel and the use of sirens by non-official vehicles are prohibited to maintain a calm voting environment.

Special attention will be given to people with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges. The IG has instructed that polling stations be made accessible to all voters, ensuring inclusive participation in both urban and rural areas.

Furthermore, the police urged citizens to avoid making prank calls to the emergency numbers designated for reporting incidents during the election. The IG emphasized that text messages would be more effective for quick response during emergencies.

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities that could undermine the integrity of the election. The police have set up control room numbers for inquiries and reporting, including contacts for the Deputy Inspector-General and Assistant Inspector-General overseeing the election.

The Inspector-General also stressed the importance of adhering to these directives to prevent interference and intimidation during the voting process. He called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to follow electoral laws, warning that any attempts to disrupt the election would be met with legal consequences.
