FG Upgrades MBA Maiduguri To Int’l Airport

In a bid to revitalise the aviation industry, President Bola Tinubu’s government has upgraded the Muhammadu Buhari Airport in Maiduguri to international status.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, announced this during a courtesy visit from Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum at his office in Abuja.

Keyamo highlighted that northeastern Nigeria, particularly Borno State, serves as a commercial hub connecting Nigeria with other countries.

He stated that the airport is set to commence full operations as an international airport on January 1, 2025. 

“The establishment of an international airport in Maiduguri is strategic for receiving international flights from the Middle East. It possesses the capacity, size, population and infrastructure to function as an international airport,” Keyamo said.

The minister emphasised that the economic potential in Borno State remains largely untapped. With this development, northeastern Nigeria is poised for economic revival.

Zulum expressed his satisfaction with the upgraded status of the Muhammadu Buhari Airport. He commended President Tinubu, the minister and the entire aviation sector for their efforts in transforming the industry.

The governor assured the minister that the northeastern governors would provide the political support necessary for the airport’s smooth operation. 

“The services in the sector have improved; anyone can attest to that. In terms of safety, the aviation sector has experienced significant development and growth. I have seen the efforts the Nigerian government is making for a better aviation industry,” he noted.

Additionally, Zulum urged the Nigerian government to expedite the establishment of a national carrier that would serve the interests of Nigerians.
