Nigeria completed a sweep in the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup group stages, wrapping up the round with a 1-0 victory against host country Dominican Republic.

Following up from wins against New Zealand (4-1) and Ecuador (4-0), Nigeria established a firm grip of group A with victory in Wednesday’s encounter against the host.

Unlike in their previous matches, the free scoring Nigerian girls couldn’t break the opponent’s defence and were denied chances until late in the game.

The deadlock was broken in the final minute of regulation time through Shakirat Moshood (89′).

It was Moshood’s fourth goal of the campaign as she leads the goal scoring chart in the tournament.

Nigeria’s spot in the quarter finals had already been confirmed after the victory against Ecuador, and awaited their opponent in the next round.

Bankole Olowookere’s side will now prepare to face the USA in their next game of the competition.

The Americans secured a runners up spot with a dominant performance in their final group game, played Tuesday night.

Team USA roared to a 5-0 victory over South Korea, securing a second victory in the round and eventually finish behind group leaders, Spain who came from behind to beat Colombia 2-1.

So far, only Spain and Nigeria posted perfect records in the first round of the tournament.

Meanwhile, games in the knockout rounds will kick off on October 26, with Nigeria and USA locking horns at the Estadio Cibao FC, Santiago de los Caballeros.
