Flamingos crash out of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after 2-0 loss to USA

Nigeria’s hopes of advancing in the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup ended in disappointment as the Flamingos lost 2-0 to the USA in a quarterfinal clash on Saturday, October 26.

The match, held in a rematch of their quarterfinal encounter from the 2022 edition in India, saw the Nigerian girls outclassed by their American counterparts.

The USA began the game cautiously, defending deep to nullify Nigeria’s attacking threat. The deadlock was broken in the 40th minute when the USA was awarded a penalty after sustained pressure. Kennedy Fuller calmly converted from the spot to give the Americans a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Flamingos came out with renewed determination, pushing forward in search of an equalizer. However, the USA’s disciplined defence held firm, frustrating Nigeria’s attacking efforts.

The USA doubled their lead in the 74th minute when Kennedy Fuller provided a well-timed pass to Kimmi Acsanio, who slotted home from close range. Despite making several substitutions in an attempt to spark a comeback, the Flamingos could not find a way past the resolute American defence.

The defeat brings an end to a promising campaign for the Flamingos, who had won all three of their group-stage matches before the quarterfinal exit. Despite their impressive group-stage performances, they were unable to replicate that form against the USA.

With the win, the USA progresses to the semifinals, where they will face the winner of the North Korea vs. Poland fixture.
