Former Presidential Candidate Donates N70 Million to Anambra Higher Institutions

Former Anambra state governor and ex- Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has made generous donations totaling N70 million to three higher institutions in the state.

At the official opening ceremony of Shanahan University in Onitsha, Obi contributed N50 million towards the development of the institution. Additionally, he donated N10 million each to Holy Rosary Specialist Hospital/Maternity Onitsha and the College of Nursing, Saint Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital Onitsha.

During a speech at the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity in Onitsha, Obi stressed the importance of knowledge, stating that “the currency for the future is knowledge, not oil.” He praised the Catholic and Anglican Churches for establishing some of the best educational institutions in the world.

Contributions to the University

Obi expressed his belief in supporting humanity through the Church and called on the institutions to admit students without bias towards denomination, tribe, or nationality. He revealed plans to extend his contributions to the University on the Niger and the School of Midwifery at Iyienu, emphasising the importance of investing in the future.

The Archbishop of Onitsha, Valerian Okeke, thanked Obi for his generosity, while Vice Chancellor Obi Oguejiofor announced free internet facilities and lunch for students on the occasion. Oguejiofor highlighted Shanahan University’s aspirations to be a premier institution, with plans for a 1,500-capacity auditorium and a commitment to sponsor students’ scholarships.

Obi emphasised that his donations were not driven by political motives but by his dedication to education and national development. He commended the church for its role in establishing world-class educational institutions and reiterated his commitment to contributing to a better Nigeria.

The event showcased the collaborative efforts of public figures, religious leaders, and educational institutions in advancing the country’s educational landscape.
