Nigerian midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi has cleared the air on his availability for invitation to the Super Eagles.
Currently playing for Italian Serie D club Avezzano, Onazi has been with the club since 2023.
The midfielder boasts 52 caps for Nigeria, having made his national team debut under the legendary Stephen Keshi in 2012.
Over his international career, he has contributed one goal and four assists.
Although Onazi’s last appearance for Nigeria came in 2018, he has not officially retired from international football.
However, a series of injuries have impacted his form, leading many to believe he may no longer fit into the current national team setup.
Speaking to Brila.net, the 2013 AFCON winner reiterated his commitment to playing for Nigeria.
“I have not retired. If they call me an ex-international I don’t know why, but anyway it is okay.”
Onazi’s journey with the national team started at the U-17 level under coach John Obuh in 2009. He later progressed to the U-20 team, making his debut in 2011, before earning his first senior cap in 2012.
He was a key member of Nigeria’s AFCON-winning squad in 2013 and also represented the country at the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018.
