Abba Yusuf

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has honoured Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, with the NUT Golden Award in recognition of “his transformative efforts in reforming the state’s education sector.”

A statement, on Sunday, said the governor was decorated during the World Teachers’ Day 2024 celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja, on Saturday.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, brought together teachers and education stakeholders from all 36 states of Nigeria to celebrate their contributions to the education system.

In his remarks, NUT National Chairman, Titus Ambe, emphasised that only six governors were selected for this honour, based on their dedication to advancing education, particularly in terms of supporting teachers’ welfare and ongoing training.

He noted Governor Yusuf’s administration’s significant strides in improving the education landscape in Kano State.

“Notably, he allocated 29.9 per cent of Kano’s 2024 budget to education and declared a state of emergency in the sector, leading to enhanced infrastructure and increased access to quality education,” the NUT Chairman said.

Speaking on behalf of the six awardees, which also included the governors of Borno, Oyo, Benue, Enugu, and Kebbi states, Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to further investing in education.

“Sustaining progress is essential to ensure that future generations thrive,” he stated.

The event featured remarks from various dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Akume praised the honorees for their commitment to educational advancement, underlining the critical role teachers play in shaping Nigeria’s future.
