Mental Health: Benue Lawmaker raises alarm over rising cases

A Member of the Benue State House of Assembly, Honourable Elias Audu has raised concerns about the increasing rate of mental health illnesses in Benue State, located in North Central Nigeria.

In an interview with Voice of Nigeria in Makurdi, the lawmaker expressed regret that individuals living with mental health issues are often neglected in developing nations like Nigeria.

He disclosed that the Federal Medical Centre in Makurdi has seen a significant increase in the number of patients seeking treatment for mental health conditions, indicating a worrying rise in mental health challenges.

Audu emphasized that mental health conditions are related to cognitive processes and behaviors influenced by factors such as heredity, societal pressures, anxiety, depression, phobias, and schizophrenia.

In response to this growing issue, the lawmaker, who also serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, has proposed a bill for the establishment of a Mental Health Agency in Benue State.

The aim of this agency is to protect the rights of individuals with mental illnesses.

With a background in mental health psychology, Audu explained that the bill seeks to create awareness about mental health conditions and ensure that individuals with mental health issues are treated with the same level of respect and care as those with physical ailments.

He highlighted the importance of addressing cases of involuntary psychiatric detentions and providing necessary support to individuals who struggle to manage their mental health effectively.

Audu also mentioned plans for collaboration with international donor agencies to support mental health initiatives in the state, with EPIN transitioning its focus from HIV care to mental health support.

The enactment of this bill is expected to provide the Mental Health Agency with the resources needed to fulfill its mandate and ensure that individuals with mental health conditions receive appropriate care.

Audu stressed the importance of combating mental health challenges due to their impact on both individuals and society as a whole.

He pointed out the urgency of addressing criminal behaviors linked to mental health disorders like kleptomania.

The lawmaker highlighted the need to eliminate stigmas and discrimination against individuals with mental health conditions, particularly in education and employment sectors.

He advocated for holistic support and understanding for those facing such challenges.

Audu emphasized the importance of mental health education in educational institutions, households, and workplaces to create a more inclusive and empathetic society.
