Messi Sets New Football Record Against Bolivia

Lionel Messi became the player with the most goal involvement in the history of football with a hat-trick and two assists in Argentina’s 6-0 win over Bolivia on Wednesday.

Messi took advantage of a defensive mix-up to give Argentina the lead in the 19th minute before setting up Lautaro Martinez, and Julian Alvarez.

He scored two goals in two minutes to complete his hat-trick and to seal a historic win for Argentina.

Messi now holds the record for the most goal contributions in football history.

The 37-year-old has now scored 846 goals, and provided 377 assists in his career, totalling 1,223 goals—making this the highest in official matches.

He now scored his 10th hat-trick in the colours of Argentina and the 58th of his illustrious career, He and Ronaldo share the record of the most international hat-tricks with 10 each.

He also secured his place as the second-highest goal scorer in international football, overtaking the legendary Ali Daei with his 110th goal for Argentina in 189 games.

Ronaldo holds the record for the highest goal scorer in International football with 132 goals in 215 appearances, Messi has now overtaken Ali Daei to grab the second spot.

Messi was delighted to mark his return with an impressive performance after missing out of action since the Copa America final in July.

He said, “It is very nice to play here feeling the affection of the Argentina fans, It makes me emotional to listen to how they shout my name. We all enjoy this connection with the fans and we love playing at home.

“It’s a joy to be present and appreciate this moment. Being surrounded by younger teammates, given my age, makes me feel like a kid again.

“I find myself doing silly things because I feel so comfortable. As long as I maintain that feeling and can continue contributing to the team, I plan to be here enjoying [the national team].”

Messi provided an update about his plans for Argentina amidst talks of retirement.

“I didn’t set any date or deadline about my future,” Messi said. “I’m just enjoying all this. I am more emotional than ever and taking all the love from the people because I know these can be my last games.”

Messi became the first player in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying history to score three hat-tricks.

He scored the first against Ecuador in 2016, the second one came against Bolivia in 2021.

Messi is now the top scorer in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers with six goals.
