The incident left millions without electricity, with all 22 generation companies (GenCos) offline.

The grid recorded zero megawatts between 8:45 AM and the time of reporting, marking the eighth significant grid disturbance in 2024.

This latest collapse has sparked widespread frustration among Nigerians, questioning the reliability of the country’s electricity supply. Previous assurances from the Minister of Power seem to have fallen short.

The frequent grid collapses have severe economic consequences, with estimated annual losses in billions of dollars.

The outages also significantly impact the quality of life, hindering work, study, and business operations.

Nigeria has experienced 20 national grid collapses in the last five years, with a 76.47% decline in grid disturbances between 2020 and 2024 compared to the previous five years.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to confirm the incident or provide details on the cause and potential resolution.

The TCN’s silence on the matter has raised eyebrows, fueling public skepticism about the government’s ability to address the power sector’s deep-rooted issues.
