Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), Hajji Gafar Liameed, has spoken out on the Super Eagles’ traumatic experience in Libya during their recent trip for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Liameed, a delegate who accompanied the team, praised the leadership of Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, for guiding the team through an immensely challenging ordeal.

The Super Eagles were stranded at the Al-Abraq International Airport in Libya for nearly 18 hours, facing poor treatment from local authorities. The situation escalated when the team was denied proper care, leading to their decision to boycott the scheduled match against Libya.

Liameed expressed deep appreciation for the efforts of both the NFF President and the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, MON. He stated, “The NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, is a wonderful leader, personified leadership at its best! Every single one of his decisions throughout the ordeal gave us all hope.” He also praised Dr. Sanusi, noting, “I appreciate the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, MON, for his unwavering support and leadership during this critical time.”

Liameed further reflected on the negative commentary from some Nigerians, particularly on social media, who appeared to excuse the Libyan authorities’ actions. He remained undeterred by such distractions, reaffirming his dedication to serving Nigeria, especially in football, despite any criticism.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has since launched an investigation into the incident, while Nigerian authorities demand an explanation from Libya for their actions. Despite the ordeal, Liameed and the Super Eagles remain focused on future success, determined to rise above this challenging experience.
