Nigeria @ 64: NHSA Committed To Sustainable Water Mgt

As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring sustainable water management, crucial for the country’s growth, health and climate resilience.

In a message personally signed by the NHSA director-general, Umar Mohammed, the agency emphasised the essential role of water resources in national development. 

“As we celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, it’s a moment to reflect on our nation’s journey and the critical part water resources play in our growth,” the statement read. The NHSA highlighted its continuous efforts to monitor and manage Nigeria’s vast water resources, providing crucial data for effective planning and response to hydrological challenges such as flooding and drought.

The agency also outlined plans to address the impact of climate change and increased rainfall. “We aim to implement proactive measures, including enhanced monitoring, improved drainage systems, and community awareness programmes to better prepare for extreme weather events,” the statement added.

Mohammed further called for collaboration between government agencies, local communities and stakeholders to enhance water security and promote environmental sustainability. 

“As we move forward, I urge all Nigerians to value our natural resources and advocate for their preservation. Together, we can build a more resilient and prosperous nation,” the statement concluded.

The NHSA remains dedicated to strengthening resilience against water-related challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for Nigeria.
