NSIB, UK Universities Train Personnel, Military In Multimodal Transport Accident Investigation

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a multimodal transport accident investigation training programme involving personnel from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force and NSIB officials.

This initiative is part of NSIB’s ongoing efforts to enhance transportation safety across various sectors, aligning with the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo’s vision for improving the aviation and transport industries in Nigeria.

The training is being conducted by international experts from Cranfield University and Buckinghamshire New University in the United Kingdom, along with specialists from Nigeria’s Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and other reputable institutions. The programme aims to equip NSIB personnel and military investigators with advanced investigative skills and knowledge of global best practices in transportation safety.

This training marks a significant milestone in NSIB’s mission to provide world-class transportation investigations and implement preventive safety measures. The programme strengthens the Bureau’s capacity to manage complex investigations, improve safety protocols, and reduce future incidents. By integrating military personnel with NSIB investigators, the training fosters a multidisciplinary approach that ensures comprehensive knowledge transfer and cross-sector collaboration – both essential for advancing transportation safety in Nigeria’s growing economy.

Director-general of NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., underscored the importance of the initiative: “The goal of this programme is not only to enhance our technical investigation skills but to ensure we can address the increasing complexity of Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure. By involving military institutions and incorporating international expertise, we are building a safety culture that will benefit all Nigerians.”

In a statement, the director of public affairs and family assistance at NSIB, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji explained that the training aligns with the bureau’s strategic goals of improving investigative efficiency, ensuring transparency in safety reports, and proactively preventing future accidents through effective risk management. These objectives resonate with Keyamo’s vision of raising safety standards, building capacity, and modernising safety protocols in line with global advancements.

“The minister’s vision is clear,” Badeh Jr. continued. “He is focused on creating a safer, more efficient aviation industry, and through programs like this, we are contributing to that vision by ensuring our investigators have the tools and knowledge to uphold the highest safety standards.”

The training is expected to significantly enhance NSIB’s ability to conduct thorough and impartial investigations, contributing to accident prevention and ultimately saving lives.
