Pastor Adeboye defends wealth amidst backlash over Bishop Oyedepo's lavish 70th birthday

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Bishop David Oyedepo’s 70th birthday celebration, which caused a stir after it was revealed that the Bishop received two Rolls Royces and ₦1 billion in cash from church members.

The extravagant gifts, presented at the church’s headquarters in Ota, Ogun State, sparked mixed reactions. While some were impressed by the luxury, many Nigerians expressed outrage, leading to heated discussions on social media.

Amid the ongoing debate, Pastor Adeboye addressed the issue in a recent video, offering a bold perspective. He argued that it is better to be wealthy than to live in poverty, noting that society will criticize either way.

“Someone gave a bishop a car and people got upset, as if a bishop must suffer and be poor,” Pastor Adeboye remarked. “If you die poor, they will blame you. But if you start driving a Rolls Royce, they will attack you. So, which would you rather choose? They’ll criticize you whether you live in poverty or abundance.”

His statement has further fueled discussions, with some agreeing with his views while others remain critical of the luxurious lifestyle embraced by some religious leaders.
