PDP Dominates Akwa Ibom LG Elections, Wins 30 Of 31 Councils

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a major victory in Akwa Ibom State’s local government elections, winning 30 out of 31 council seats in the October 5 polls. The PDP achieved the highest number of votes cast in the majority of the local government areas.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) managed to claim victory in Essien Udim Local Government Area, the home base of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), confirmed the results in a statement. The PDP won in its strongholds of Uyo, Onna, Esit Eket, and Eket, as well as in Nsit Ubium, the local government area of Governor Umo Eno. The party also claimed victory in Oron, Mbo, Itu, and Ibiono councils, along with other areas, except for Essien Udim.

The election was marred by an incident in Ibiono, where the election office was set ablaze by suspected hoodlums before the voting commenced. Despite this, the Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, KufreAbasi Edidem, commended the peaceful conduct of the elections in Itu Local Government Area.

Edidem, who represents the Itu constituency in the assembly, made his remarks at Atai Ibiaku Itam, Ward 11, after casting his vote. He acknowledged the late start of voting in some areas, attributing it to the poor road conditions between the AKISIEC office in Mbak Itam and the polling units in East and West Itam.

“The election has been peaceful and well-conducted,” Edidem said. “Where there have been delays, it’s largely due to the poor state of the roads, making it difficult to transport materials.”

He praised voters for their peaceful behavior and expressed confidence that the PDP would win both chairmanship and councillorship seats across the state.
