Senator advocates for new state in Southeast, opposes state police

Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, the Senate Deputy Chief Whip representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, has called for the establishment of an additional state in Nigeria’s Southeast region, emphasising the importance of equity and fairness.

Speaking at the Senate Committee on Constitution Review retreat in Kano, Nwebonyi argued that creating a new state would foster peace and stability in the region, stating, “This call is not just about division but about equitable representation.”

In his remarks, Nwebonyi opposed the idea of state police, asserting that the Nigerian Police force can effectively police the country if adequately equipped.

He remarked, “Instead of creating state police, we should strengthen the Federal Police, which requires collaborative efforts from federal, state, and local governments.”

The retreat, attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from State Assembly Speakers and past federal legislators, aimed to deliberate on constitutional amendments with long-term implications.

Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, urged members to handle discussions carefully, noting that their decisions will significantly impact future generations.
