Shekarau donates N50m to Borno flood victims

The League of Northern Democrats on Wednesday donated the sum of N50m to victims of the recent flooding, which submerged Maiduguri and its environs.

The chairman of the group, who was also a former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, announced the donation during a sympathy visit to Governor Babagana Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri.

Shekarau, at the event, said the group was aware of the extent of damage the flooding had caused on the people of the state as well as on critical infrastructures.

In his words, “We are here to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of Borno State in the aftermath of the devastating flood that has brought untold hardship to our brothers and sisters in Maiduguri and its environs. The loss of lives, destruction of homes, and the outbreak of diseases that have followed in the wake of this disaster are a great tragedy that has touched us all.

“As the League of Northern Democrats, we believe that in times of crises, collaboration and cooperation are very important. It is this belief that has driven our members to contribute a total sum of N50m to support the government’s effort to alleviate the sufferings of the affected communities,” he said

According to him, the League of Northern Democrats is a recently formed group of patriots from all parts of the north.

Shekarau stressed that, “The league comprises virtually a representation from all political parties. When we are meeting, we keep the banner of our parties outside the door. Of course, when the election comes, everybody goes back to that.

“It is not about any political party or particular individual. It is not about  government. It is about the growth and development of the north and, by extension, the entire federation,” he added.

While commending Governor Zulu for his swift response to the disaster, he said, “Your excellency, we commend your tireless efforts in leading the state’s response to this disaster. Your swift and determined actions in the face of such adversity have been a source of hope and reassurance to the people of Borno State.

“You have shown remarkable leadership alongside your team to mobilise resources and ensure that those most affected are not left behind.

“We also pray tribute to his royal highness, the Shehu of Borno for his steadfast leadership and guidance during these challenging  times. His role in providing moral and spiritual support and offering comfort to the people as they navigate this difficult period is well appreciated,” he concluded.

Responding, Zulum hailed the group for the sympathy visit, saying, “We appreciate you for this visit. May Almighty Allah reward you abundantly. On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I am expressing my sincere appreciation to all of you.

“In particular, I want to acknowledge the receipt of the N50m you donated towards alleviating the sufferings of the displaced communities. I want to assure you that the money donated shall be judiciously utilised,” Zulum assured the team.

After the meeting, the  group visited the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for a physical assessment of damaged infrastructures and facilities at the centre.
