Who can apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship?

Students who hold a non-EU/EEA passport and have applied for a degree programme at the University of Amsterdam may submit an application for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship. 

Requirements for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, regardless of the course or program of study you offer, you must fulfill these requirements.

1. Citizenship: To gain access to applying for this scholarship, you must be a citizen of any country except those from the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA).
2. Language Requirement: The primary language of communication is English, and you should be able to communicate effectively in it. If you are a non-English speaker, you are also required to have all your documents translated into English before applying.
3. To be admitted, you must already have been accepted into a one-year full-time master’s degree program at the host university. This means you need to have received acceptance to enroll in the program.
4. English Test Certificate: Provide English test scores (TOEFL or IELTS).
5. Academic prowess: You must be someone with an excellent academic record and intellectual capacity.
6. Benefactor of other scholarships: The scholarship committee does not accept candidates who are benefactors of other European university scholarships.

The following documents are needed for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship:

• Two letters of recommendation 
• A motivation letter of a maximum of 500 words explaining the reasons why you chose the master’s degree program and the importance of receiving the scholarship. You can use this LLAMS sample as a guide.

How to apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

You can submit your AMS application by completing the following steps:

1. First, submit your application for the Master’s programme of your choice. Note that your Master’s application needs to be complete, with all required documents including valid language test scores.
2. Receive your UvA student number and MyInfo reference number.
3. Fill out and submit the application form for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (see link below). You will need to upload the following documents: 

• Scan of identity page of passport
• Curriculum Vitae
• Letter of motivation
  Your letter of motivation should entail how the Master’s programme of your choice will help you fulfill both your personal and academic goals and should explain why you are the best candidate for the scholarship.
• Letter of recommendation
  Your letter of recommendation should foremost indicate your academic qualities. This letter should be written by a professor or another member of the academic staff.
• Financial plan
  Your financial plan serves to show that you do need the scholarship as well as proof that you have sufficient funds to cover all other costs.

Applications for an AMS scholarship should be submitted no later than 15 January 2025, 23:59 CET.
