The Super Eagles of Nigeria have moved up in the latest FIFA World Rankings, climbing three places from 39th to 36th globally under the leadership of interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.
This rise in the rankings marks a positive change for Nigeria, following a previous decline that saw them drop to 39th. Eguavoen’s efforts have brought stability and better results, helping the team maintain its position among Africa’s top five nations.
Nigeria Ahead of Ghana and South Africa
While Nigeria made progress, Ghana and South Africa have struggled in the rankings, falling further outside Africa’s top 10.
Elsewhere on the continent, Algeria climbed four places to 37th, while Cameroon returned to the top 50, rising to 49th.
Several smaller nations also made significant gains. Equatorial Guinea (88th), Zimbabwe (117th), and The Gambia (128th) all improved by six or seven places. Botswana saw the biggest jump, moving up seven places to 140th after gaining 38.30 ranking points.
Comoros and Sudan had dramatic improvements as well, each climbing 10 places to 108th and 110th, respectively, following impressive performances in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
African Football Becoming More Competitive
The latest FIFA rankings show how competitive African football is becoming, with traditional giants like Ghana slipping, while smaller nations rise.
Nigeria’s progress under Eguavoen comes at a time when the Super Eagles aim to solidify their place among the best teams in Africa.

- Morocco – 13th
- Senegal – 20th
- Egypt – 30th
- Nigeria – 36th
- Algeria – 37th
Globally, Argentina remains the top-ranked team, ahead of France (2nd) and Spain (3rd). Brazil sits in 5th place, while Portugal (7th) and Italy (9th) are the only movers in the top 10.
