Nigeria winger Nathan Tella has expressed his frustration over limited playing time at Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Tella joined Leverkusen from Southampton last summer but has struggled to secure a regular spot in the first team. The 25-year-old featured in 24 league matches last season, mostly coming off the bench, and has made only three appearances so far this season.

In an interview with German newspaper BILD, Tella admitted his frustration with the situation but revealed that head coach Xabi Alonso had encouraged him to stay patient.

“It’s frustrating, to be honest,” Tella said. “But I spoke to the coach. He assured me that I will get opportunities and that I have to be patient.”

The winger is determined to make the most of any future chances. “When I get a chance, I have to show myself. I think I’ve done well and I also believe I’m training well. Now it’s up to the coach to trust me. He makes the decisions – and they’ve worked well so far.”

Tella will now hope for more opportunities as Leverkusen aim to maintain their strong start to the season.
