We Have Rearrested Three Escaped Convicts In Borno — Police

No fewer than three escaped convicts have been arrested following the flood disaster in Borno State that led to the collapse of the Alau dam in the Alau community of Konduga Local Government Area of the state.

The Borno Police Command disclosed to THE WHISTLER on Wednesday that since the incident, its operatives have rearrested three, two of which were announced to have been rearrested on October 11 and 16 respectively.

The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) on September 15, revealed that 271 inmates had escaped during an evacuation by service officers in the aftermath of the flood.

On October 11, an escaped convict, Kyari Kur, 28, serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft was reported to have been rearrested by operatives of the command the previous day.

On October 16, the police said it rearrested Awalu Aminu, 24, serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft. His arrest followed a credible tip-off after he was sighted in the Banki town area of the state.

“The police patrol swiftly responded and apprehended the said Awalu Aminu,” a statement by the State’s Police Command read on Wednesday.

Further query by THE WHISTLER revealed that there is a likelihood of more rearrested convicts by other security agencies and the Correctional Service.

Speaking to THE WHISTLER, the spokesperson of the command, ASP Nahum Kenneth said, “From the police angle, what we have is three so far, out of about 200, although I am not abreast of other details from the Correctional Service; From the police what we did is that after they shared the information of those that escaped, we have been making effort to rearrest the escaped convict.

“However, as of now, I am aware of three so far but there are more. They are supposed to have gotten to 30 by now. Some of the convicts voluntarily returned while others were returned by their families to the Correctional Service.”

Recall that the NCoS while pledging to work with other security agencies to rearrest the fleeing inmates said it had activated both covert and overt deployments to manhunt the convicts.

As of September 15, the Service said seven inmates had been recaptured and had returned to custody.

When contacted to get a detailed number of the number of inmates recaptured thus far, the National Spokesperson of the NCoS, Umar Abubakar requested to “call back” because he was driving, and would be required to contact the Maiduguri command of the Service for confirmation.

On April 24, a heavy downpour brought down a fence in the Suleja correctional facility in Niger State which led to the escape of 118 inmates. Three months later the Service asked the public to help recapture 31 of those escapees.
