Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with an emphatic 4-0 win over Ecuador.

Having already defeated New Zealand 4-1 in their opening game, the victory over Ecuador gives the Flamingos six points from two matches, cementing their spot among the tournament’s best teams. The Nigerian side has now scored eight goals and conceded only one.

Shakirat Moshood opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 26th minute to give Nigeria an early lead. In the second half, Harmony Chidi doubled the advantage in the 54th minute after receiving a brilliant pass from Aishat Animashaun.

Peace Effiong made it 3-0, and Moshood sealed the win with her second goal to complete the 4-0 triumph.

Coach Bankole Olowookere Reacts

After the game, head coach Bankole Olowookere expressed his delight with the team’s performance. He posted on social media:

Harmony Chidi, who scored a goal and provided an assist, was named Player of the Match for her outstanding display.

The Flamingos will look to maintain their perfect record when they face tournament hosts, the Dominican Republic, in their final group match on Tuesday.
