Why West Ham Penalty against Manchester United was awarded — Premier League explains

The Premier League have released a statement explaining why West Ham were awarded a dramatic late penalty in their 2-1 win against Manchester United.

Manchester United suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday evening but the scoreline was settled in controversial circumstances.

Matthijs De Ligt collided with Danny Ings inside the box, leading to a spot kick that was eventually dispatched by Jarrod Bowen.

The referee David Coote didn’t give the spot-kick immediately, instead waving away West Ham's appeals. However, VAR official Michael Oliver advised Coote to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Bowen went on to convert the penalty past Andre Onana, securing the winner after Casemiro had equalised following Crysencio Summerville’s opener.

Premier League issue statement on West Ham penalty against Manchester United

A statement from the Premier League shortly after explained:

“The referee did not award a penalty to West Ham for a challenge by De Ligt on Ings.

"The VAR deemed there was sufficient contact on Ings’ lower leg and recommended an on-field review.

"The referee overturned his original decision and awarded a penalty.”

The pressure is firmly back on Ten Hag, who has led his side to just 3 Premier League wins in 9 games, leaving them 14th in the standings.

When asked post-match by if he had spoken to refereeing officials about the decision, Ten Hag said: "I spoke with them. But the decision is made.

"There's no way back and that's football. That's the third time I have felt injustice in the season and it has a big impact on our team and our scores and where we are in the table. It's not right."
