WTO DG Commends DG RMRDC On Improved Utilisation Of Nigeria’s Raw Materials

Director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has lauded the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) for organising a transformative programme presentation and dialogue event aimed at improving Nigeria’s raw material utilisation for sustainable industrial growth.

Speaking at the event held in Abuja, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala praised the initiative, emphasising the significance of platforms that foster collaboration between policymakers, researchers and private sector stakeholders. “I commend your efforts to promote dialogue on the improved utilisation of Nigeria’s raw materials. Nigeria stands to benefit immensely by processing its raw materials locally and exporting finished goods. This aligns with the WTO’s re-globalisation drive, facilitating Nigeria’s integration into global supply chains and supporting sustainable development,” she said.

The event focused on advancing Nigeria’s industrial development and enhancing global trade competitiveness through the strategic sourcing of local raw materials. It also served as a platform for strengthening partnerships between key stakeholders in the industry.

During the programme, RMRDC highlighted various initiatives designed to help industries access locally sourced materials. Presentations showcased key programs aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependency on imports, enhancing supply chain resilience and positioning the country as a regional trade hub under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

In his address, RMRDC director-general, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso reaffirmed the council’s commitment to industrial development. He emphasised that the council’s mission is to equip the private sector with the tools and knowledge needed to leverage local resources for sustainable production. Ike-Muonso noted that this inaugural event represents a crucial step in improving Nigeria’s industrial landscape.

The dialogue featured panel discussions that explored solutions for boosting Nigeria’s local production and fostering sustainable growth. Experts from various sectors participated in the discussions, offering insights into how Nigeria can enhance its industrial competitiveness by maximising the use of locally available raw materials.

Okonjo-Iweala expressed optimism about the future collaboration between the WTO and RMRDC, noting that the two organisations could work together to promote sustainable development in Nigeria’s industrial sector.

The successful event underscores Nigeria’s commitment to advancing sustainable growth through innovation, local resource utilization, and international cooperation.
