Stipedium Hungaricum Scholarships Details

The Hungarian Government established the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme to promote the internationalisation of Hungarian higher education and to attract top international students from all around the world.

The Stipedium Hungaricum Scholarship aims to produce students who can establish personal and professional links to Hungary while enjoying high-quality education in the heart of Europe.

When Stipedium Hungaricum Scholarship graduates return to their home countries with marketable skills and knowledge, they can build social, political and economic relationships.

They are hence contributing to extending and deepening cooperation between Hungary and their home countries.

Stipendium Hungaricum, the Hungarian Government’s most prestigious higher education scholarship programme, offers a wide range of courses for high-achieving international students with an excellent academic track record.

The scholarship aims to support the internationalisation of Hungarian higher education and its constant development.

The scholarship will also strengthen the international relations of the academic and research community, and promote the good reputation and competitiveness of Hungarian higher education worldwide.

The programme, founded by the Hungarian Government in 2013, is supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and managed by the Tempus Public Foundation.

The programme is based on bilateral educational cooperation agreements signed between the Hungary and the governments of the sending countries/territories.

Currently over 90 Sending Partners are engaged in the programme throughout 5 different continents, attracting more than 5000 international students each year.  

Applicants are offered more than 600 full degree programmes, covering all higher education fields at all degree levels, including part-time and doctoral programmes.

Stipedium Hungaricum Scholarship Requirements

To be eligible for the undergraduate and postgraduate Stipedium Hungaricum Scholarships, applicants must:

  • be at least 18 years old as of 31 August 2024 except applicants applying for Dance study programmes,
  • not be former Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Holders who were awarded scholarships for full degree studies and who are now re-applying for full degree or partial studies in the same cycle or lower level of education
  • be an international student
  • meet the minimum requirements of the participating institutions chosen by the applicant
  • demonstrate language (English or Hungarian) proficiency.

Available Programmes and Participating Universities

For the 2024 round of the Stipedium Hungaricum Scholarship;

  • 30 Hungarian https://stipendiumhungaricum.hu/partners/higher education institutions are engaged in the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme for the 2024/2025 academic year,
  • with about 800 study programmes in foreign languages (taught mainly in the English language).
  • Study programmes are generally available in the English and Hungarian languages, with some programmes offered in German and French as well.
  • The available study programmes and Host Institutions are accessible in the online application system
  • Please note that you can only apply for these study programmes within the framework of the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme.

Mastercard Foundation Scholarships at U of T Benefits and Timeline

  • Tuition-free education
    • exemption from the payment of tuition fee
  • Monthly stipend
    • non-degree, bachelor’s, master’s and one-tier master’s level: monthly amount of HUF 43,700 (cca EUR2 110) contribution to the living expenses in Hungary for 12 months a year until the completion of studies.
  • Accommodation contribution
    • free dormitory place (depending on institutional capacity) or a contribution of HUF 40,000/month to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period
    • (Please note that if the student does not live in the dormitory, the HUF
      40,000/month is a contribution to that rental costs, and in bigger cities – especially in the capital city – this contribution would not cover the full amount of rental costs.)
  • Medical insurance
    • health care services according to the relevant Hungarian legislation (Act LXXX of 1997, national health insurance card) and supplementary medical insurance for up to HUF 65,000 (cca EUR 170) a year/person

You will be submitting the following while applying for the 2024 U of T Mastercard Foundation Scholarships;

  • completed online application form – all applicable sections must be filled out, including contact information, financial information, personal details and responses to essay questions.
  • Motivation Letter
  • Proof of Language Proficiency (and its translation if not English or Hungarian)
  • School certificates and translation
  • Transcripts of records and translation
  • Medical certificate
  • National ID Card or Copy of valid passport
  • Applicants are eligible to apply only if they meet the minimum language criteria set by the chosen Host Institution.

  • In addition to the first choice of study programme, there is an opportunity to apply for an additional, second study programme. Therefore, each applicant can apply for up to TWO different study programmes, in order of preference.
  • These two study programmes can be both at the same Host Institution and different Host Institutions; it is the applicants’ decision.
  • The order of preference is essential. During the application process, the first selection and examination procedure will be conducted for the study programmes selected as the applicants’ primary choices.
  • These primary choices will be considered first, and then, only the remaining free places will be filled
    with those applicants who are not approved for their primary choice of programmes.
  • In this way, the chances of receiving the scholarship are relatively higher for the study programmes selected as primary choices because there are more free places at that time.
