Abia Lawmaker, Alex Ikwechegh Undergoing Questioning — FCT Police

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed that the Abia State lawmaker, Alex Ikwechegh, captured assaulting a bolt driver is currently undergoing questioning at its Maitama Division.

The command in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh revealed this on Monday.

The bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya had reported a case of assault by the lawmaker representing Aba North/South Federal Constituency to the Division on Sunday.

The incident which occurred at the residence of the lawmaker in the Maitama area of the city was captured in footage by the driver.

During the altercation, the lawmaker was captured repeatedly slapping the driver for allegedly disrespecting him, while asking him (the driver) to seek the office of the Inspector General of Police if he so wished.

Reacting to the situation which has now elicited reactions from many Nigerians, the FCT police command disclosed that “the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.”

The command further reiterated the warnings of the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, asking the public to refrain from misusing the office of the Inspector General of Police to intimidate others.

The command said partly: “Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery.

“During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.

“The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident.

“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.

“Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, has mandated a thorough investigation into the matter.

“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken.”
