Abia Lawmaker Detained For Allegedly Assaulting Driver In Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a Nigerian lawmaker, following an alleged assault on a driver in Abuja.

Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that Ikwechegh is currently at the Maitama Police Station for questioning. According to the Command’s statement, the incident was reported by Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya, who claims he was physically assaulted by the lawmaker over a disagreement regarding package delivery.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a disagreement arose over the delivery method. During the dispute, Mr. Abuwatseya reported being physically assaulted,” the statement said.

The Command expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s alleged remarks following the incident. After the alleged assault, Ikwechegh reportedly dismissed the significance of the incident, stating, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” which the Command described as a “troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.”

FCT Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure a fair outcome. “The Command is committed to an impartial investigation. Upon completion, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the statement added.

This incident mirrors a similar case in the United Kingdom, where British lawmaker Mike Amesbury was caught on video apparently assaulting another individual. Following the footage, Britain’s Labour Party suspended Amesbury pending an investigation.
