FCTA Launches Project 10 Mln to Screen Residents for Hypertension, Diabetes

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has launched Project 10 Million, a health initiative aimed at screening over 250,000 residents of Abuja for hypertension and diabetes.

This seven-day free screening exercise, themed “Know Your Number, Control Your Number,” is part of a nationwide campaign supported by the Committee of Health Commissioners, the Governor’s Forum, and the Federal Ministry of Health.

The program, running from October 28 to November 3, 2024, will help tackle the silent killers, hypertension and diabetes, which often progress without noticeable symptoms but can lead to severe health complications if left unchecked.

The initiative’s goal is to screen 10 million Nigerians for blood pressure and blood sugar levels as part of the fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Speaking at the launch, the Mandate Secretary for FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe emphasized the importance of the campaign, noting that FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike (CON), has called on all residents to take advantage of the free screenings.

“This is a vital opportunity for early detection and better management of these conditions,” Dr. Fasawe stated, urging widespread participation.

In a statement by SSA, Media to the mandate Secretary, Bola Ajao, Dr. Fasawe said that the program will target over 200 communities within the FCT, with health workers visiting underserved areas to ensure equitable access to essential screenings.

“General hospitals, primary health centers, places of worship, markets, garages, and parks will serve as screening points to reach as many people as possible,” she added.

Residents have been reassured of the safety and effectiveness of the screenings, with referrals being made to government hospitals for severe cases.

“Medications will also be provided free of charge to reduce any financial strain on those diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes.”

The exercise will continue in Abuja from October 30 to November 6, 2024, allowing more residents to take part in this essential health intervention.
