Bobrisky Scandal: Minister Seeks Correctional Service Reforms

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has warned that the Nigerian Correctional Service will now undergo major reforms.

The Minister made this known on Monday.

The talks of reforms follow after Activist, Martins Otse a.k.a. VeryDarkMan, exposed a phone conversation involving Crossdresser, Idris Okuneye aka Bobrisky, and a friend while in prison.

In the audio, Bobrisky was heard stating that plans were in place for him to serve out his then 6month jail term in a ‘VIP Section’ of the Kirikiri prison.

Bobrisky was also heard mentioning reaching out to Folarin Falana aka Falz and his father, Femi Falana (SAN) for a presidential pardon to be secured.

The Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ibrahim Usman, was also implicated in the scandal.

In the aftermath of the viral audio, the minister ordered an investigation into the allegations.

Following investigations, two officers of the correctional service were subsequently suspended.

“We want to reform the correctional service. Your core responsibility is to investigate specific allegations of corruption, torture, and mistreatment of inmates by correctional officers, especially the immediate one concerning Bobrisky, which I expect to be completed in two weeks.

“There is a need for a holistic approach to unravel the issues being investigated, through empirical and fact-finding processes.

“We will rely on you to come up with a way forward, as well as facts that will be made public to Nigerians. I want to say this very clearly: nobody will be shielded. Nobody, no matter how highly placed, will be shielded,” the Minister said during the inauguration of the committee set up to investigate the allegations on Monday.
