Tragedy struck on Saturday night, October 26, when gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted a businessman, Sunny Onuenze and shot dead Samuel Okere, a father of four, at an estate in Army Range axis of IgboEtche, Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Mr. Onuenze, a scrap metal dealer at Mile Building Material Market, was taken away, while Mr. Okere, a generator mechanic from Ofeh community in Omuma Local Government Area, was fatally shot.

In a heart-wrenching account, Mrs. Peace Ulaku Samuel, Okere’s wife, described the events leading to her husband’s death.

“He went out to walk around after pumping water. I heard gunshots, and when I called his line, it rang but no one picked up. I thought he was hiding.”

Mrs. Samuel searched for her husband with her sister and found his corpse in a nearby farm around 5 am.

“So we started looking for him near our house, look round will did not see him.The next plot of land there close to us, we now enter there,is not really bush,is farm they farm there,we now saw his corpse. That is how we saw the corpse.

“That night Igwuruta Police Division came and now noticed that, that our side is under Etche division, they said is under Etche.I dont know really if Etche Division came later”.

The incident was reported to Umuebule Police Division in IgboEtche, and the corpse was taken to an undisclosed mortuary in Omuma LGA.

The Rivers State Police Command has yet to comment on the incident. However, suspected kidnappers have established contact with Mr. Onuenze’s family.

Mrs. Samuel appealed for justice, saying, “If possible, we want to know those that shot him, so we know what to do about it. The kids are still small, and only I cannot train them.”
