CAF Investigates Nigeria’s Challenging AFCON Trip to Libya

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has addressed the recent controversy surrounding Nigeria’s AFCON qualifier against Libya, acknowledging the difficulties faced by the Nigerian team during their trip. Speaking at the 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Motsepe confirmed that an investigation is underway but refrained from commenting specifically on the Nigeria-Libya match.

The Nigerian squad encountered major hurdles, including flight redirection, over 18-hour delays, and logistical problems that disrupted their preparation. Players such as captain Troost Ekong, Victor Osimhen, and defender Kenneth Omeruo expressed their frustration, with Omeruo calling it a “terrible” decision to play in Libya due to the country’s instability.

Motsepe highlighted that such incidents, where visiting teams are poorly treated, have been an ongoing issue in African football. He reiterated CAF’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment and sportsmanship, vowing that stricter measures would be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The CAF president stressed that visiting teams must be treated with respect and dignity, and any violations of these principles would lead to action.
