Captain Troost-Ekong confirms Super Eagles’ returning to Nigeria after Libya airport saga

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has confirmed that the Nigerian national team are returning home after being stranded at Libya’s Al Abaq airport.

The team had arrived in the country ahead of Tuesday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights.

The situation led the Super Eagles to announce they would boycott the match, following what they described as mistreatment by Libyan authorities.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) also lodged a formal protest with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the incident.

Updating fans via his X account, Troost-Ekong said, “Power of social media. Apparently, our plane is being fueled as we speak and we should be leaving to Nigeria shortly. Thanks for everyone’s support!”

The Super Eagles captain also emphasized that Nigeria would never treat a guest nation similarly.

“Mistakes happen, delays happen. But never on purpose!” he added, expressing disappointment over the ordeal.
