Court Fixes Oct 7 To Rule On Varing Bail Conditions For End Bad Governance Protesters

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja on Friday, fixed Monday, Oct. 7 for ruling in an application by the 5 defendants arrested in connection to the #EndBadGovernancelnNigeria protests in Kano and Abuja.

THE WHISTLER had reported that Justice Nwite granted N10m bail each to the 11 persons arraigned for participating in the Aug 1 to 10 protest across the country.

At the last adjourned date, Counsel for the 1st defendant, Marshal Abubakar informed the court that some of the defendants were unable to meet their bail conditions, due to lack of funds and urged the court to vary their bail conditions.

At Friday’s proceedings, Abubakar moved the motion for variance of the bail conditions for the 5 defendants unable to meet the bail conditions.

Police prosecution and Senior advocate, Simon Lough did not oppose the application for variance, as long as the defendants will be able to abide by it.

Justice Nwite after listening to both parties, fixed Oct. 4 for ruling.

It would be recalled that the defendants who are said to be organisers of the protests were re-arraigned on an 8-count amended charges bothering on alleged treason, intent to destabilise Nigeria, conspiracy to commit felony and inciting to mutiny which is an offence punishable under section 97 of the penal code.

The Police on Sept 27, had to re-arraign the defendants after they filed an amended charge, increasing the charges from 6 to 8, in order to include an 11th defendant, Daniel Akande.

The protesters, Michael Adaramoye also known as Lenin, Aderemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaoluwa Simon, Angel Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nuradeen Khamis and Abdulsalam Zubairu and Daniel Akande are listed as the 1st to 11th defendants, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CR/454/2024.

Justice Nwite therefore fixed October 4, for hearing on variation of bail conditions and November 11 for continuation of trial.
