FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike inspecting projects

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), on Tuesday announced that it will no longer tolerate unapproved taxi and bus parks in Abuja’s city centre starting in 2025.

The decision follows the progress made on the construction of modern bus terminals, which are expected to provide organized alternatives for commuters.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, disclosed the plan after inspecting two key bus terminals under construction in Nyanya and Mabushi.

During the inspection, the minister expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting that the terminals will help streamline the city’s transportation system.

Wike had previously stated that action could not be taken against illegal parks without offering a viable alternative to the public.

The construction of the terminals, was flagged off in July, and was initially projected to take 15 months, with an October 2025 deadline.

However, contractors assured the minister that the projects will be ready for commissioning in January 2025.

“I am so excited. This site was flagged off on July 1, and within three months, you can see what they have been able to do. The time given to them is 15 months to complete the project, but with the speed the contractor is going, we believe it will be before that 15 months,” Wike said.

He further emphasised that once the terminals are completed, unregulated bus and taxi services on the roads would no longer be permitted.

“By the time we finish these terminals, you won’t need to have those ones. We won’t allow buses and taxis to pick on the roads. Everybody has to move to the various terminals,” he added.

The minister noted that the terminals in Mabushi and Kugbo are part of a broader effort to improve transportation infrastructure in Abuja, and offer residents a more efficient and organised commuting system.
