Flooding: Kwara asks riverine residents to relocate

The Kwara State Government has asked residents of riverine areas in the state to relocate to safer places to avoid disaster.

This is as the government launched a sensitisation campaign in the areas in a bid to avert loss of lives and property and prevent the outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases.

Commissioner for Environment in the state, Nafisat Buge, made the plea on Friday, when she visited Gbaradogi village in Patigi Local Government Area the state, according to a statement signed by the Press Secretary of the ministry, Kamaldeen Aliagan.

“The current administration is deeply concerned about the impending flood situation and will therefore take proactive measures at ensuring safety of lives and property and as well avoid the outbreak of communicable diseases,” Buge said.

She urged those residing in riverine communities to heed the government’s warnings by relocating to higher grounds or the Internally Displaced Persons camp provided by the state government.

The commissioner also warned against travelling on the river during the rainy seasons to prevent boat mishaps, advising that “residents should follow the government’s directives on evacuation as provided by the state Ministry of Environment and the State Emergency Management Agency.”

In his response, the village Head of Gbaradogi, Ndatsadu Muhammad, requested more relief materials to alleviate the suffering of affected people, particularly in the provision of food and potable water.
