Foundation plans girl-child club in Abia schools

An NGO, Oluchi Kalu Girl-Child Foundation, has disclosed plans to establish and register girls’ clubs in secondary schools in Abia.

Founder of Oluchi Kalu Girl-Child Foundation, Ms Oluchi Kalu, disclosed on Monday, while sensitizing female students at Girls Secondary Commercial School and Abayi Girls’ Secondary School, Abayi, all in Aba, as part of her outreach in the state to the girl-child on the International Day of the Girl-Child, stating it’s plans to enhance the girl-child through scholarship and empowerments, among others.

Sensitizing the female students on the occasion, Ms. Kalu advised that there are opportunities for them to explore themselves, and lectured them on girl-child hygiene, while urging them to shun surfing immoral sites on the internet, watching social media films that are not suitable for them and make judicious use of their time as a girl-child.

She said, “Look inward, find out what you can do effortlessly, shape your mindset and imbibe education to shape your future life and not to be dependent on any man under the guise of love.

“Concentrate on yourself, use your brain and mould your character, imbibe humility and be leadable. Get knowledge and move away from those vices that will harm you. Nobody will build your life for you except yourself.”

She further advised them to cultivate reading with scheduled plans to help their education, warning, “If you mess up your life, you will bear the consequences. Try to put your life in order.”

She said that to improve the girl-child, her foundation has concluded plans to register and establish Girls Club in the secondary schools in the state to help the girl-child with all she needs to be composed, including extra-curricular activities, scholarships, and other empowerments, including self-awareness lectures.

In their appreciation speeches, Miss Hope Jonah of Girls Secondary Commercial School, Aba and Miss Ujunwa Grace, an SS3 student of Abayi Girls Secondary School, Abayi Aba, said that they have learnt enough to enable them to have self-awareness, assuring that they would continue to uphold the womanhood in them.

In her vote of thanks, the Principal of Girls Secondary Commercial School, Aba, Mrs Theresa Alioha, who was represented by her teacher, Mrs Chioma Bassey, expressed her gratitude to the foundation, assuring that the school management will continue to assist the girls to realize themselves.

She said, “We are grateful for the talk and advice. We have been doing so in the school, but your coming has reinforced all we have been teaching the students.”

The occasion featured question and answer sessions, and donations of gifts, including sanitary materials and cash to the students.
