“Godfatherism can happen in Lagos, not Rivers” — Wike in old video

A video clip from the past featuring former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike campaigning against the godfather syndrome is currently making the rounds on social media.

In the video, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is heard stating that the godfather syndrome, which has impacted several states in Nigeria, will not be tolerated in Rivers State.

His remarks emphasize a commitment to fostering a political environment free from the dominance of influential political figures, reinforcing his stance on promoting political independence within the region.

He particularly opined that the system of godfatherism may happen in Lagos State but not Rivers.

“It may happen in Lagos State but it cannot happen in Rivers, we are quite different. As a governor, I will come and go and I can’t stop it.

“The day that my tenure ends, by the grace of God, I will go. When you are thinking that what is happening in Lagos State, we will do it here, it may be difficult.

“You can’t continue to say that you must be a godfather of a state. That is the problem and it is not possible”, he said.
