A new attendance record for a Dominican national football match was set in Santo Domingo as 13,535 fans gathered to watch the Dominican Republic face Nigeria’s Flamingos in the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Despite the overwhelming home support, the Dominican Republic fell 1-0 to Nigeria in a heartbreaking defeat. The winning goal came in the 88th minute when Shakirat Moshood found the net, sealing the Dominican Republic’s exit from the tournament.
The Dominican Republic entered the match with hopes of a positive result to advance to the knockout stage but finished the group stage with just one point. Their only point came from a 1-1 draw with New Zealand in their second game.
The Flamingos, who secured the crucial win in front of the record-setting crowd, now progress in the competition, while the hosts bow out with pride after making their debut appearance on home soil.
