Super Eagles coach, Augustine Eguavoen expressed relief following his team’s 3-0 victory over Libya in the 2025 AFCON qualifying match, on Friday, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The win was particularly significant as the Super Eagles were without key player, Victor Osimhen, and needed to maintain top position on the table.
Despite concerns about their ability to secure a win in Osimhen’s absence, the Super Eagles managed to deliver a convincing performance.
The match was challenging, with the Libyan national team playing defensively, making it difficult for Nigeria to break through.
It seemed the game might end in a draw until substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru found the net, capitalizing on a well-placed pass from Moses Simon.
In the post-match press conference, Eguavoen acknowledged the importance of the victory but expressed a desire for a higher goal tally.
“It’s a big relief for me and the boys, obviously. Three points are important, but I expected us to score more goals. For some reason, we didn’t find the back of the net early enough due to the tactics Libya deployed.
“Overall, we are very happy with the three points, which help us maintain the first position at the top of the log.”
The Super Eagles will face Libya again in the reverse fixture on October 15, aiming for another win that could secure their qualification for AFCON 2025.
