Jehovah Nissi – The LORD My Banner
Origin: Exodus 17:15
Story: Moses built an altar and named it Jehovah Nissi after the Israelites' victory over the Amalekites. With Moses’ arms raised, symbolizing God's power, the Israelites won the battle, and God became their banner of victory.
God as Our Banner Today
In our lives today, Jehovah Nissi is still relevant. While we may not fight physical battles as the Israelites did, we face spiritual, emotional, and mental battles daily. The enemy may come against us with various forms of opposition—temptations, fears, discouragement, or challenges beyond our control—but like the Israelites, we can trust in God to be our banner.
Just as banners in ancient times provided focus and a sense of belonging to an army, God as our banner reminds us of His constant presence and victorious leadership in our lives. He fights for us, not only in moments of crisis but also in our day-to-day struggles. By looking to Him and recognizing that the battle belongs to the Lord, we can find courage, strength, and ultimate victory.
In Psalm 60:4, the psalmist writes, “You have set up a banner for those who fear you, that they may flee to it from the bow.” Here again, we see the imagery of a banner as a refuge and symbol of God’s protection over His people. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ becomes the ultimate expression of Jehovah Nissi. Through His death and resurrection, He won the greatest victory over sin, death, and Satan. As we follow Christ, we march under the banner of His victory, knowing that “if God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).
