The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken a firm stance against the unauthorized use of its uniforms by social media activist VeryDarkMan, also known as Martins Otse. In a recently surfaced video that has gone viral, Otse was seen wearing a police uniform adorned with the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), prompting swift backlash from law enforcement.

In the footage, VeryDarkMan expressed his commitment to combating injustice in Nigeria, but the police were quick to disassociate themselves from his actions. On Saturday, October 27, the NPF released a statement via X, announcing the launch of an investigation to trace the origin of the police gear and to ascertain the authority under which Otse operated.

While the police acknowledged the importance of fostering creativity among young Nigerians, they emphasized that misusing official symbols undermines the integrity and values of the Force. “The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorized portrayal and has launched a full investigation,” the statement read.

The NPF also reminded the public that the unauthorized use of police uniforms and insignia constitutes a criminal offense under Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, carrying severe penalties.

“While the Nigeria Police Force recognizes and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the content creation space, we strongly caution against the misuse of police uniforms or symbols. Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated,” the statement concluded.
