Nigerians celebrate CAF verdict in favour of Super Eagles

Most Nigerians have expressed satisfaction with the verdict of CAF that gave the Super Eagles three points and three goals in botched 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya.

The Super Eagles were held hostage for 20 hours at a Libyan airport prior to a 2025 AFCON qualifier in Benina, Libya.

Rather than go ahead and play this match, the Super Eagles flew back to Nigeria to formally complain against the maltreatment they suffered at the hands of the North Africans.

Today, CAF ruled that Libya breached several of their rules and besides forfeiting the match, they were also slammed with a fine of $50,000.

Lagos FA chairman Liamed Gafar, who was on the Super Eagles ill-fated trip to Libya, said it was justice well served.

“CAF saw clearly that we escaped death by a whisker!,” he rejoiced

:Those Libyans do not understand the four fundamental things which hold the entire universe together – humanity, religion, politics and football.”

Sports lawyer and CEO of NPFL club Enugu Rangers Amobi Ezeaku further praised the decision of the continental football ruling body.

“I am pleased with CAF’s decision to award three points and three goals to Nigeria following the challenges faced by the Super Eagles during their AFCON qualifier against Libya,” he said.

“This ruling not only acknowledges the unjust treatment our team endured but also reinforces the principles of fairness and integrity in African football.

“It serves as a reminder that all teams deserve respect and proper treatment, ensuring that the spirit of competition is upheld across the continent.”

However, sports journalist Lekan Olaseinde insisted CAF ought to have slammed a heftier fine on Libya for the harrowing experience they put the Super Eagles through.

“$50,000 fine? My foot! That’s a mere slap on the wrist for the Libyans,” he complained.

In social media, most Nigerians sided with the CAF ruling.

 Diran posted: “It is highly commendable that Africa is now stepping up and a clear signal and warning for all teams.”

“CAF must not tolerate underhand tactics by its member nations, football must be fair play. Host nations must respect visiting teams,”. demanded Adebisi via X.

Lending his own thoughts, Sean added: “CAF has shown the world that indiscipline and unsportsmanship not tolerated or allowed in African Football with this rightful verdict and it’s a relief to Super Eagles of Nigeria.

“Kudos to them.”

Finally, Isaac Chukwudi said same –  “CAF now you are talking.. Good judgement CAF.. Next time other African countries will do the needful. Nor play with Naija ooo because u go collect wotowoto oooo.”
