The Nigerian-born striker has been in brilliant form this season for club and country

Nigerian-Spanish striker Samu Omorodion put on a spectacular performance for Spain U21, scoring four goals in their dominant win against Malta further distancing any hopes of him representing Nigeria's Super Eagles, despite his eligibility.

Omorodion wasted no time in making his mark on the game against Malta, netting his first of four goals just five minutes in.

He followed his early goal up with another strike in the 37th before completing his hat-trick in style two minutes later.

As if that was not enough, the former Atletico Madrid star added his fourth goal during first-half stoppage time, sealing a commanding first half for Spain U21 who went on to win 6-0.

His incredible display came hot on the heels of a standout performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he won a gold medal with Spain’s U23 team, solidifying his reputation as a future star for La Roja, making it increasingly unlikely that Nigeria will ever see him don the green and white jersey.

Nigeria misses out as Omorodion shines for Porto and Spain

Omorodion’s club form has been equally impressive this season, with seven goals in seven appearances for Porto, including a brace in a Europa League match against Manchester United.

Although his career trajectory took a hit after a failed move to Chelsea and a difficult period where he was ostracised at Atletico Madrid, Omorodion has since rediscovered his form and confidence in Portugal.

Unfortunately for Nigeria, the striker's commitment to Spain's youth teams indicates that his future lies with La Roja, leaving the Super Eagles to ponder what could have been.
